Key Points to Remember About Posture Control for Bunker Shots

Posture Control

Key points to remember are:

  • As you swing and rotate, shifting your weight through the shot, try to keep the postural angles you set at address the same, i.e. No lifting or dropping of the head.
  • Your centre of gravity should be slightly to the left of the ball at impact but not too excessively as you do not want the shaft to lean forward too much or you will de-loft the club.
  • Please be aware that you need to keep your right elbow and the inside of your right forearm in a comfortable tension free position to ensure your right elbow folds properly during the swing and you swing on plane.
  • In a full golf swing the left side of the pelvis should be slightly higher than the right, otherwise your spine does not rotate properly.  For bunker shots however your pelvis should generally be level to facilitate a good spine bend.  Try experimenting with different positions for different types of shot:

Playing a bunker shot with confidence

Short Bunker Shots - keep your hips level and your spine angle to the right (say 10 degrees or so).

Longer Bunker Shots - keep a normal hip position (your left hip a few degrees higher than the right) and your spine angle to the right (say 10 to 15 degrees or so).

Plugged or downhill lies - try your left hip a little bit lower than your right and your spine a little bit to the left, as this promotes a steeper angle of attack into the ball.
