It is important to understand and get a feel for the ball flight of the different type of chips and pitches.

Variations of ball flight are achieved via club selection or technique.
Individuals will have personal preferences generally dictated by their ability to play a favoured shot. E.g. if you are good at lower flighted shots you will tend to see the shot as a low flight shot as your first option, compromising on a higher flight shot as and when required.

Whilst preference is important, developing the ability and skill to play a variety of ball flights and shots is imperative to aid scoring around the green.
