Tiger Woods has his say on Rory Mcllroy

By Thomas Rooney - Posted on 24 March 2009

Just weeks after returning to competitive action after a long injury lay-off, Tiger Woods has been asked for his opinion on Northern Ireland teenager Rory Mcllroy. The youngster is tipped for big things in his professional golf career and has already made an impact in 2009. The 19-year-old is ranked at number 16 in the world and recently won his first title at the Dubai Desert Classic.

All of this means that Woods’ view on Mcllroy is very significant. The American will know what it takes to achieve success after being built up by the media at a young age. So what does he think of Northern Irish golf’s hottest prospect?

Well, Woods has said that there is ‘no doubt he has the talent’ to achieve great things in the sport. The World No.1 believes that Mcllroy has ‘all of the components’ to become the best player around.

This is quite a statement from Woods and Mcllroy will surely be honoured that he is being talked about in this light by one of the greatest players to have played the game. It puts even more pressure on his shoulders, but Woods clearly believes that the youngster can handle it.

The 14-times major winner went on to say that it is all about ‘gaining experience in major events’ for Mcllroy and that given time, he will be right up there with the best in the world.

It has to be good for the sport that another young talent is emerging at such a rapid pace. When Woods was out of action, there was something missing from events. The sport as a whole suffered.

However, over the next few years there could be the normal excitement surrounding the American, but then the added bonus of watching hat the extremely talented Mcllroy can achieve.

How about a Woods v Mcllroy play-off in the final of this year’s US Open? Now that would be quite something. The master taking on the apprentice in one of the biggest tournaments of the year. It would be the stuff that dreams are made of.

For now though, we will have to settle for observing how Woods returns to form following his injury and how Mcllroy progresses with the more experience he gains. Watch this space.
