Europe to delay naming 2010 Ryder Cup captain

By Thomas Rooney - Posted on 14 January 2009

It seems that the decision over who should captain Europe in next year’s Ryder Cup is proving a difficult one to make. An announcement was expected on Tuesday after a committee met to discuss the options, but they were unable to come to a satisfactory conclusion.

As a result, it is now likely that the decision over who will succeed Nick Faldo will be made towards the end of this month and perhaps beyond even that. The committee met in Abu Dhabi for almost four hours, but a unanimous decision was not made and they will meet again on the 28th January with an announcement expected to be made the next day.

It is obviously a very important choice for the European team to make as they will be looking for revenge at Celtic Manor next year. Team USA emerged victorious back in September and the European team will want to make sure they do everything they can to avoid this happening again. This includes choosing the right captain, of course.

So, who are the favourites according to the golf odds? Well, Jose Maria Olazabal, Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle are the front runners and when it comes down to it, these are the three that the committee will probably be choosing from.

There is no doubt that opinion on who would be the best captain is divided, with a number of ex-captains and journalists suggesting who they would go for.

Former captain Sam Torrance believes that Woosnam is the ‘right man’ for the job.

The BBC’s Iain Carter is of the opinion that no one deserves it more than Olazabal.

Another former captain Bernard Gallacher thinks that Olazabal’s potential playing commitments could hamper his chances of landing the role.

Finally, Tony Jacklin has said that Olazabal would be a ‘deserved captain’, but has also promoted the chances of Lyle because of his ‘good credentials’.

Overall, there is a tough decision to be made and with the American team already naming their captain as Corey Pavin, the European committee are under pressure not to delay the announcement too much longer.
