Possible Winners of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, South Africa 11-14 Dec 2008

By Pete Cowen Golf... - Posted on 11 December 2008

PGA Master Professional, Pete Cowen, is Europe’s leading golf coach by player victories. This time last year, one of his players, Englishman John Bickerton recorded his 3rd European Tour victory winning the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek narrowly beating local hero Ernie Els, after Ernie capitulated on the final hole.

Unfortunately, John Bickerton couldn’t defend his title this year, so Pete Cowen has kindly given us his view of the other top players he has worked with and their chances of winning in South Africa this week.

Simon Dyson (ENG)

He should perform well in South Africa, as he drives the ball well and is pretty determined to perform well. The greens are different to what the players are used to as they have plenty of grain on them. He’s a good ball striker and if he can putt half-decent then he’s got an excellent chance of winning. He’s also using a local South African caddy this week which might give him an edge.

Seve Benson (ENG)

This is his first tournament on tour after getting his European Tour card last year with a creditable 5th place finish on the Challenge Tour. He is a good young prospect but will be just feeling his feet in this event.

Louis Oosthuizen (SA)

He’s a good young player on home soil and has every chance of being in with a shout at the end.

Mark Foster (ENG)

He is worth considering as he clearly likes playing in this part of the world having won the Dunhill Championship in Johannesburg in 2003 after a six-man play-off.

Lee Westwood (ENG)

This kind of course will suit his game. This Gary Player designed course is a tough course and as we saw last year with Ernie Els’ on the 18th hole, the finishing holes are tough with water creating a classic risk and reward situation. If he’s in contention with a few holes to play then he’ll be hard to beat.

Oskar's stats are very impressive and he did play well but he only went and shot one over par for one round and ruined it!

Wasn't Robert Aitken's 61 impressive?

Maybe Oskar.  (Minus) - 47 for his last twelve competitive rounds.

Who do you think is going to win this week?

I fancy Louis Oosthuizen to do well this week - he's got the ability to shoot low if need be and if he gets off to a good start then he has to have a chance with all that home support.

Last time I looked Westwodd was already 6 under!  That Pete Cowen must know what he is talking about.

Play up Pompey!

My money is on Simon Dyson - I think he's very dishy and always dresses so well in that Galvin Green gear....and his caddy is a hunk too!
