MCLGA Autumn Meeting

Commiserations to Rita Dee! Rita played in the Autumn Meeting today at Swanston New Golf Course and was ecstatic after her round - not becuase she was in the winnings but because she had played out of her buffer and, with her handicap curently at 9.4, would go up 0.5 and would therefore be off a playing handicap of 10. However, on checking her card it was pointed out to her that she would be handicap corrected at one hole by 2 strokes which would take her into her buffer if the CSS were to remain unchanged. But there was still hope! A few good scores were already in and a few more could cause a reduction in the CSS. Well, apologies Rita, the good scores were not enough to affect the CSS and it remained unchanged at 70. Better luck in the next medal!
But back to the day. At 7.15 am your Captain approached Swanston New Golf Club to find it shrouded in mist. Panic ran through her - it was going to be postponed; it might even be cancelled; after the fiasco with the Summer Meeting this was all Midlothian needed! But no sooner had everything been unpacked from the car than the mist lifted and left one of the best days of the year - hardly a breath of wind and temperatures in the high teens - far better than either of the Summer Meeting days.
And so the players took to the course, being led by none other than County Champion Linda Caine. Playing to her handicap and returning a score of 75, she not only led the field on the course but she led the scratch scoring from start to finish and wins the Lady Ford Cup. Suzie Laughland was also an early starter and after a lot of discussion as to whether she was going to enter the 2's sweep or not and how she never ever has a 2 but today might just be the day and if she didn't enter............... she returned to the clubhouse, all smiles, not just because she was in the money for scoring a 2 but because she had had a tremendous score of net 65 which held all day to win best overall net. Two more sub-par rounds were recorded, one by Vivien Mitchell who wins best scratch in the bronze section (having done the same last week in the Summer Meeting) and the other by Fiona Findlay who wins 1st handicap in the silver section, both recording net 68s. A slight jump was then needed, but only to net 71 to find the the winner of the bronze handicap, Winnie Wilson, and the second best net overall, Gillian Pritchard, while a net 72 won Pat Meikle 2nd handicap in the silver division on a count back.
Well done to all 58 ladies who turned out to play. Yet again, there were 3 ladies who were non-shows. What happened to you? Where did you get to? Unfortunately the Captain, Vice-Captain and President did not take to the course but the general feeling was that everybody enjoyed themselves, the course and, need I add, the weather! Our thanks go to all at Swanston who made it a great day and who looked after us so well, to all who brought a prize for the raffle table and who bought raffle tickets. The raffle raised £91.50 which, as ever, will be put to good use with the County Juniors.
The results were as follows:CSS 70
1st scratch and the Lady Ford Cup: Linda Caine (Dunbar) - 772nd scratch: Ruth Brown (Lothianburn) - 78
Best net overall and the McIntyre Trophy: Suzie Laughland (Royal Dornoch) - 79 less 14, net 652nd net overall: Gillian Pritchard (Ravelston): 87 less 16, net 71
Silver Division1st handicap: Fiona Findlay (Lochend) - 88 less 20, net 682nd handicap: Pat Meikle (Lochend) - 88 less 16, net 72
Bronze Division1st scratch: Vivien Mitchell (Prestonfield) - 911st handicap: Winnie Wilson (Ravelston) - 96 less 25, net 71 There were 6 2's today, each winning £9.00. The 14th proved the most popular hole with 2's by Muriel Gilligan (Swanston New), Diane Moncrieff (Lochend) and Lynda Taylor (Dalmahoy). Katy Gillies (Melville) got hers at the 5th, Coleen Derighetti (Lochend) at the 9th and Suzie Laughland (Royal Dornoch) at the 17th.

Would the Big Apple take a bite out of Tiger Woods?

Golf For Beginners - Thu, 02/09/2010 - 14:46
Would Tiger Woods thrive in the Big Apple or will a possible rebound apartment in New York City send him packing to Jupiter Island, Florida?

As Chris Cross' song states ("Arthur" Soundtrack), "When you get caught betweeen the moon and New York City, the best that you can do is fall in love.."

With reports varying from Tiger Woods not moving into an apartment on Hudson Street in New York to internet articles pondering if it would be a good idea, I wondered the same.

Tiger Woods is no stranger to the Big Apple: he has a few memories (cough...Bethpage Black) which have sent him packing. But it is the latest issue of a $54 million mortgage taken out on his Florida bachelor pad may just have taken the bite out of his plans.

After reading ten reasons Tiger Woods should have an apartment in NYC and then the opposing side (both on Bleacher Report), I wondered if the greatest golfer in the world would be happy in the biggest city in the world or anywhere at this point in his life!

Elliott Pohnl's positive response to Woods' new digs leads to the conclusion that will spur Tiger on to more wins. From Tiger Woods "turning over a new leaf" to the ability to dodge the press, the benefits seem to neutralize the negatives.

On the flip side, having Rachel Uchitel close at hand isn't necessarily a good idea as New York City is ripe with young single women and plenty of cougars ready to pounce on newly single golf royalty. The need to fix his life before his golf swing also should have been damage control priority during the 2010 season, but better late than not at all.

On the flip side, I don't believe RM Herold should be offering up an opposing view as to why Tiger Woods' bachelor pad is a "bad idea."

First of all, advice should not be given by someone who is terrified of New Yorkers.

"Nothing but dirty looks and snide comments as I walked down the street with my 'Yankees Suck, Red Sox Rule' t-shirt on." You are lucky that you didn't get that tee-shirt ripped off of your back!

Seriously, New Yorkers have a lot of respect for the Red Sox team: it's the fans we have a problem with! Walk through the streets of Boston during post-season and you will see what I mean. I have never seen so many hate mongers hawking tee-shirts filled with venom as in Boston. Too bad...Beantown is really a lovely place to visit.

Back to the opposing view as to why Tiger Woods should stay away from the Big Apple.

He's a West Coast guy? Not really since Woods already owns digs in Jupiter Island and Windemere.

Traffic? Tourists? Privacy? Perhaps a problem for Tiger Woods as he doesn't like the spotlight but if DeNiro and a host of other celebs learn to live with and handle the pressures of New York living, I'm sure it will be a cinch for the top golfer in the world.

Of course, TMZ would have a field day with this, sending out paparazzi to lurk near the hottest clubs and in front of Woods' new digs for photo opps!
The bottom line is that there is too much time being spent conjecturing on Tiger Woods' private life, whether or not he will take a place in NYC, etc. The media should give Tiger Woods and his family time to pick up the pieces. Let's focus on the golf and hope that Woods makes a comeback for the sake of the game.

Rules Fatigue Grips Golf World

Armchair Golf Blog - Thu, 02/09/2010 - 13:17
IF JIM FURYK’S CELL PHONE didn’t lose power last week at The Barclays, would the PGA Tour have suspended its pro-am policy for the rest of the season? In a word, no. I don’t think so. No one would be talking about the rule and the so-called unfairness of it. Popular, headline-grabbing Phil Mickelson wouldn’t be sounding off and the PGA Tour wouldn’t have a PR problem.

(Photo: Dustin Johnson is in a bunker, and knows it / Gordons, Flickr)

Furyk is a good guy, a gamer who fulfills his tour obligations. His cell phone battery failed him. That, and his lack of a backup. To play the PGA Tour, you need to guard against equipment failure on and off the course. In addition to carrying those three or four wedges, you’d be wise to have two alarms.

It was an odd incident, just like the Dustin Johnson bunker incident at the PGA Championship, and Juli Inkster’s donut DQ at the Safeco Classic, and last weekend’s cheating allegations at the LPGA event in Canada, which is a different kettle of fish.

People are fed up. Stupid rules. A guy doesn’t know he’s in a bunker. A gal is trying to warm up after a 25-minute delay in the middle of her round. A guy overslept and showed up five minutes late for the pro-am. Rules, rules, rules.

The golf world is ready to throw the book at the rules book. Granted, golf does have some odd rules. And the PGA Tour does make up its own policies concerning things like pro-ams to protect its interests. But it’s not like this stuff is new.

What if this last month has simply been an odd confluence of rules violations affecting name players? Unfortunate, yes. Time to throw out the rules? Maybe not so fast. The bunker fiasco was by far the worst situation. The PGA of America needs to think hard about how they’ll conduct future championships at Whistling Straits.

As far as the PGA Tour pro-ams, here’s what Stewart Cink told Michael Whitmer of Boston.com:
I’d say less than 50 percent of the players really understand how important they are, and that’s a shame. And despite the tour’s efforts, I think that trend is going down. I don’t think players make the connection between the pro-am and the support. We aren’t born into this world with the entitlement of playing golf on the PGA Tour. All this happens through hard work and sponsorship, and we have to be attractive to business sponsors who want to put their name and their money behind us.Did the PGA Tour buckle due to the backlash? Did Dustin get shafted by an unusual local rule? Should Juli have known to stay away from donuts?

I say yes to all three. And all because the past month in tour golf has been as odd as some of the rules.

From Parks to Molinaris: Golf’s Greatest Brothers

Armchair Golf Blog - Wed, 01/09/2010 - 13:07
FRANCESCO AND EDOARDO MOLINARI will be the first brothers to compete on a Ryder Cup team since Bernard and Geoffrey Hunt represented Great Britain in the 1963 biennial matches. Francesco, 28, qualified on points, and Edoardo, 29, was a captain’s pick after a late-season run that included wins at the Barclays Scottish Open and last weekend’s Johnnie Walker Championship.

“I don’t think I have to tell you who his [Edoardo’s] partner will be in the fourballs or foursomes,” said Colin Montgomerie, the European team captain.

The Molinaris are just the latest brother act to make a splash in professional golf. They have three European Tour wins between them, which means they’ll need to rack up a lot more titles before they catch many of the following brother tandems.

(Image: The 1961 PGA champion, Jerry Barber was a short-game wizard.)

Lloyd and Ray Mangrum
Hailing from the pre- and post-World War II era, the Mangrums have the most wins, 41. Lloyd, the younger brother, was a great player, winning 36 titles, including the 1946 U.S. Open in a playoff against Vic Ghezzi and Byron Nelson. Nelson called Mangrum, a Hall of Famer, the best forgotten golfer. Ray won five times between 1936 and 1946.

Jay and Lionel Hebert
With five PGA Tour titles apiece, the Heberts didn’t come close to the Mangrums. But they did something only one other brother act (that I know of) has done: they both won majors. The younger brother, Lionel won the PGA Championship in 1957. Big brother Jay won the PGA in 1960. How cool is that? Jay, I’ve been told, had a picture-perfect golf swing.

Willie and Mungo Park
Willie Park Sr. won four Open Championships from 1860 to 1875. Mungo, his younger brother, won the Open in 1874. And Jr., Willie’s son, won it twice. Talk about keeping it in the family.

Harry and Tom Vardon
The great Harry Vardon, the namesake of the Vardon grip and Vardon Trophy awarded annually to the PGA Tour player with the lowest scoring average, won the Open Championship a record six times. His older brother Tom played in the Open Championship (but never won) and later went to America to take a job as a club professional.

Lanny and Bobby Wadkins
Lanny, the younger Wadkins, had a Hall of Fame career that included 30 wins, one major and several Ryder Cup appearances. Bobby won once on the European Tour and twice on the Japan Golf Tour, but never won in a long PGA Tour career, racking up six runner-up finishes. He’s won four times on the Champions Tour.

Jerry and Willie Barber
Jerry was a great putter who won seven times on tour, including the 1961 PGA Championship, during which he made 120 feet of putts on the last three holes to tie Don January. Then he beat January in a playoff. Jerry also played on two Ryder Cup teams. Willie, his less-famous brother, was a club professional and very good player who once joined yours truly for nine holes in the California desert.

Bernard and Geoffrey Hunt
Bernard had more than 30 professional wins and played on eight Ryder Cup teams. His brother Geoffrey joined him on the 1963 team, but they didn’t play together in any matches.

Camilo and Manuel Villegas
Camilo, of course, is the rising star who has three PGA Tour wins. Manuel is his baby brother who teed it up with Camilo at the St. Jude Classic and has played sporadically on the Nationwide Tour.

MORE BROTHERS

Following are the 12 brother combinations who have won on the PGA Tour. Four of the seven Turnesa brothers won on tour, as did three Smith brothers, of which Macdonald was the star. (The year of first official victory and career wins are in parentheses.)

Alex Smith (1906/2)-Macdonald Smith (1924/24)-Willie Smith (1899/1)
Tom Kerrigan (1920/4)-George Kerrigan (1922/2)
Al Espinosa (1924/8)-Abe Espinosa (1928/3)
Lloyd Mangrum (1940/36)-Ray Mangrum (1936/5)
Jim Turnesa (1951/2)-Joe Turnesa (1924/15)-Mike Turnesa (1931/6)-Phil Turnesa (1932/1)
Lionel Hebert (1957/5)-Jay Hebert (1957/5)
Dave Hill (1961/13)-Mike Hill (1970/3)
Don Massengale (1966/2)-Rik Massengale (1975/3)
Joe Inman (1976/1)-John Inman (1987/2)
Danny Edwards (1977/5)-David Edwards (1980/4)
Curt Byrum (1989/1)-Tom Byrum (1989/1)
Brad Bryant (1995/1)-Bart Bryant (2004/3)
